….Thanksgiving is already around the corner. I am so grateful that my family was able to share a lot of gratitude this year as well. My husband always orders mashed potatoes he likes for Thanksgiving dinner. I want to do something a little different as a potato dish this year. So I am trying the new potato leek gratin instead of mashed potatoes for my family. It adds soft heavy cream, leeks, and gruyere cheese with Yukon Gold potatoes. When you clean the leeks, first slice and then soak them with cold water. This removes impurities inside the leaves. Layer thinly sliced potatoes in a gratin dish, and then take your time sautéing the leeks. Bake them until a little golden and crisp around the edges, which brings out their sweetness. Wow delicious!! This recipe is from NYTimes Cooking.

Servings: 6

Time: 30 minutes plus 1 hour for baking

Ingredients:

  1. 1 1/2 lb Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled
  2. 2 large leeks, trimmed and sliced lengthwise
  3. 2 Ts unsalted butter
  4. 1 ts sea salt
  5. 1/2 ts black pepper
  6. 3–4 thyme sprigs
  7. 1 cup heavy cream
  8. 1 garlic clove, minced
  9. 2 bay leaves
  10. 1/4 ts cumin

6. Heat a pan with medium high heat and add the butter to melt.

7. Add the leeks, 1/4 ts sea salt, and fresh thyme into the pan to stir them until tender and golden for 5–7 minutes.

8. Take out the fresh thyme.

9. Turn off the heat and scatter the stirred leeks over the potatoes.

10. Add 1/3 cup heavy cream into the baking pan.

11. Heat a baking pan with medium heat to simmer gently for 5 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

12. Turn off the heat. Add 2/3 cup heavy cream and nutmeg into the baking pan.

13. Sprinkle the Gruyere cheese onto the baking pan.

14. Cook in a preheated oven about 40 minutes(cover with aluminum foil and transfer to the oven).

15. After 40 minutes, uncover and bake until the cheese is bubbling and golden about 15–20 minutes.

I started organizing recipes that my family likes. I learned these recipes from some chefs and popular blogs. May my daughters remember mama's food.
